A similar report (to hadith no. 337) was narrated by Abdul-Malik bin As-Sabbah with a similar chain, with the additional words: "Whoever applies kohl to his eyes, let him add it an odd number of times. Whoever does that has done well, but whoever does not, there is no harm in it. And whoever dislodges (a particle of food from between the teeth) by dislodging it with his tongue, let him swallow it." Yahya related to me that Malik said, "I heard that a beggar asked for food from Aisha, umm al-muminin, while she had some grapes. She told someone to take him one grape. He began to look in amazement. Aisha said, 'Are you amazed? How many atoms' weights do you see in this grape?' " (referring to Sura 99 ayat 7).

Aisha said to me, "O my nephew! We used to see the crescent, and then the crescent and then the crescent in this way we saw three crescents in two months and no fire (for cooking) used to be made in the houses of Allah's Apostle (SAW). I said, "O my aunt! Then what use to sustain you?" Aisha said, "The two black things: dates and water, our neighbours from Ansar had some Manaih and they used to present Allah's Apostle (SAW) some of their milk and he used to make us drink."

Yahya related to me from Malik from Abu'z-Zinad from al-Araj from Abu Hurayra that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "Beware of wisal. Beware of wisal." They said, "But you practise wisal, Messenger of Allah." He replied, "I am not the same as you. My Lord feeds me and gives me to drink."

"I used to bleed continuously and heavily. I went to the Prophet (saw) asking him for advice and telling him (about my situation). I found him with my sister Zainab and said: 'O Messenger of Allah! I need to ask you something.' He said: 'What is it?' I said: 'I bleed continuously and heavily, and that is keeping me from prayer and fasting. What do you command me to do about it?' He said: 'I advise you to use a piece of cotton, for that will take away the blood.' I said: 'It is more than that.'" And he mentioned something like the Hadith of Sharik (below). (Da'if)

The Prophet came to Medina and saw the Jews fasting on the day of Ashura. He asked them about that. They replied, "This is a good day, the day on which Allah rescued Bani Israel from their enemy. So, Moses (Musa) fasted this day." The Prophet said, "We have more claim over Moses than you." So, the Prophet fasted on that day and ordered (the Muslims) to fast (on that day).

"While at Medina we were struck with famine. Ibn Az-Zubair used to provide us with dates as our food. Ibn Umar used to pass by us and say, "Don't eat two dates together at a time as the Prophet (SAW) has forbidden eating two dates together at a time (in a gathering) unless one takes the permission of one's companion brother."

No doubt, the Prophet (SAW) mortgaged his armour for barley grams. Once I took barley bread with some dissolved fat on it to the Prophet (SAW) and I heard him saying, "The household of Muhammad (SAW) did not possess except a Sa (of food grain, barley, etc.) for both the morning and the evening meals although they were nine houses."

I heard Anas bin Malik saying: I heard the Messenger of Allah (saw) say: "Standing guard one night in the cause of Allah is better than a man fasting and praying, among his family, for a thousand years. The year is three hundred and sixty days and a day is like a thousand years."
