The Prophet once passed by two graves and said, "They (the deceased persons in those graves) are being tortured not for a great thing to avoid." And then added, "Yes, (they are being punished for a big sin), for one of them used to go about with calumnies while the other never saved himself from being soiled with his urine." (Ibn Abbas added): Then he took a green leaf of a date-palm) and split it into two pieces and fixed one piece on each grave and said, "May their punishment be abated till these (two pieces) get dry."

One of them never saved himself from being soiled with his urine, while the other was going about with calumnies (to make enmity between friends). He then took a green leaf of a date-palm tree split it into two pieces and fixed one on each grave. The people said, "O Allah's Apostle! Why have you done so?" He replied, "I hope that their punishment may be lessened till they (the leaf) become dry."

concerning the verse: "Think not of those as dead who are killed in the way of Allah. Nay, they are alive, with their Lord, and they have provision,"[3:169] that he said: "We asked about that, and (the Prophet (saw)) said: 'Their souls are like green birds that fly wherever they wish in Paradise, then they come back to lamps suspended from the Throne. While they were like that, your Lord looked at them and said, "Ask me for whatever you want." They said: "O Lord, what should we ask You for when we can fly wherever we wish in Paradise?" When they saw that they would not be left alone until they had asked for something, they said: "We ask You to return our souls to our bodies in the world so that we may fight for Your sake (again)." When He saw that they would not ask for anything but that, they were left alone.'"

Once the Prophet, while passing through one of the grave-yards of Medina or Mecca heard the voices of two persons who were being tortured in their graves. The Prophet said, "These two persons are being tortured not for a major sin (to avoid)." The Prophet then added, "Yes! (they are being tortured for a major sin). Indeed, one of them never saved himself from being soiled with his urine while the other used to go about with calumnies (to make enmiy between friends). The Prophet then asked for a green leaf of a date-palm tree, broke it into two pieces and put one on each grave. On being asked why he had done so, he replied, "I hope that their torture might be lessened, till these get dried."

that his father said that the Messenger of Allah (saw) was thinking of a horn, and he commanded that a bell be made and it was done. Then Abdullah bin Zaid had a dream. He said: "I saw a man wearing two green garments, carrying a bell. I said to him, 'O slave of Allah, will you sell the bell?' He said; 'What will you do with it?' I said, 'I will call (the people) to prayer.' He said, 'Shall I not tell you of something better than that?' I said, 'What is it?' He said, 'Say: Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah, ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah; Ash-hadu anna Muhammad (SAW)an Rasulullah, Ash-hadu anna Muhammad (SAW)an Rasulullah; Hayya alas-salah, Hayya alas-salah; Hayya alal-falah, Hayya alal-falah; Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illallah (Allah is the Most Great, Allah is the Most Great, Allah is the Most Great, Allah is the Most Great; I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah; I bear witness that Muhammad (SAW) is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad (SAW) is the Messenger of Allah; Come to the prayer, Come to the prayer; Come to the prosperity, Come to the prosperity; Allah is the Most Great, Allah is the Most Great, none has the right to be worshipped but Allah)." Abdullah bin Zaid went out and came to the Messenger of Allah (saw), and told him what he had seen. He said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I saw a man wearing two green garments carrying a bell," and he told him the story. The Messenger of Allah (saw) said, "Your companion has had a dream. Go out with Bilal to the mosque and teach it to him, for he has a louder voice than you." I (Abdullah) went out with Bilal to the masjid, and I started teaching him the words and he was calling them out. Umar bin Al-Khattab heard the voice and came out saying: "O Messenger of Allah! By Allah, I saw the same (dream) as him." (Hasan) Abu Ubaid said: "Abu Bakr Al-Hakami told me that Abdullah bin Zaid Al-Ansari said concerning that: 'I praise Allah, the Possessor of majesty and honor, A great deal of praise for the Adhan. Since the news of it came to me from Allah, So due to it, I was honoured by the information. During the three nights. Each of which increased me in honor.'"
