From: Imam Malik's Muwatta. Chapter 22, Vows and Oaths

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that Abdullah ibn Umar said, "If someone breaks an oath which he has stressed, he has to free a slave, or clothe ten poor people. If someone breaks an oath, but has not stressed it, he only has to feed ten poor people and each poor person is fed a mudd of wheat. Some one who does not have the means for that, should fast for three days."

Narrated/Authority of Rabia ibn Abi Abd ar-Rahman
Malik related to me from Rabia ibn Abi Abd ar-Rahman that Umar ibn al-Khattab spoke about a man who went out with his wife's slave-girl on a journey and had intercourse with her and then the wife became jealous and mentioned that to Umar ibn al-Khattab. Umar questioned him about it. He said, "She gave her to me." Umar said, "Bring me a clear proof or I will stone you." Rabia added, "The wife confessed that she had given her to him."

Yahya related to me from Malik that Umara ibn Sayyad had heard Said ibn al Musayyab say about abiding good deeds that they were a slave's saying 'Allah is greater' (Allahu akbar) and 'Glory be to Allah' (Subahana'llah) and 'Praise be to Allah' (al-hamdu lillah) and 'There is no god but Allah and there is no power and no strength except by Allah.' La ilaha illa'llah wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa bi'llah.

"The Messenger of Allah (saw) said: 'Whoever performs Wudu and does it well, then says: "Ashhadu an la ilaha ill-Allah wa shhadu anna Muhammad (SAW)an 'abduhu wa rasuluh (I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad (SAW) is His slave and Messenger)," eight gates of Paradise will be opened for him, and he may enter through whichever one he wishes.'" (Sahih)

"There was a man living among our dwellings who had a physical defect, and to our astonishment he was seen with one of the slave women of the dwellings, committing illegal sex with her. Sad bin Ubadah referred his case to the Messenger of Allah (saw), who said: 'Give him one hundred lashes.' They said: 'O Prophet of Allah (saw), he is too weak to bear that. If we give him one hundred lashes he will die.' He said: "Then take a branch with a hundred twigs and hit him once." Sahih

Narrated/Authority of Ikrimah bin Salamah
there were two brothers from among the sons of Mughirah. One of them swore an oath to set a slave free if the other one fixed a piece of wood to his wall. Mujammi bin Yazid and many men from among the Ansar came and said: "We bear witness that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said: 'None of you should refuse to let his neighbor fix a piece of wood to his wall.' " He said: 'O my brother, judgment has been passed in your favor against me, but I have sworn an oath.' So go ahead and fix your wood to my wall."

Allah's Apostle (SAW) said, "Everyone of you is a guardian and is responsible for his charges. The ruler who has authority over people, is a guardian and is responsible for them, a man is a guardian of his family and is responsible for them; a woman is a guardian of her husband's house and children and is responsible for them; a slave ('Abu) is a guardian of his master's property and is responsible for it; so all of you are guardians and are responsible for your charges."

Narrated/Authority of Ibn Umar
One of the wives of Umar (bin Al-Khattab) used to offer the Fajr and the 'Isha' prayer in congregation in the Mosque. She was asked why she had come out for the prayer as she knew that Umar disliked it, and he has great ghaira (self-respect). She replied, "What prevents him from stopping me from this act?" The other replied, "The statement of Allah's Apostle (p.b.u.h) : 'Do not stop Allah's women-slave from going to Allah s Mosques' prevents him."
