From: Imam Nawawi's 40 hadith. Chapter 1, An-Nawawi's 40 Hadith
Narrated/Authority of An-Numan bin Bashir
who said: I heard the
Messenger of Allah, sallallahu 'alayhi wasallam, say:
"Truly, what is lawful is evident, and what is unlawful is evident, and in
between the two are matters which are doubtful which many people do not
know. He who guards against doubtful things keeps his religion and
honour blameless, and he who indulges in doubtful things indulges in fact
in unlawful things, just as a shepherd who pastures his flock round a
preserve will soon pasture them in it. Beware, every king has a preserve,
and the things Allah has declared unlawful are His preserves. Beware, in
the body there is a flesh; if it is sound, the whole body is sound, and if it is
corrupt, the whole body is corrupt, and behold, it is the heart."

From: Sahih Muslim. Chapter 1, Faith (Kitab Al Iman)
Narrated/Authority of Usama bin Zaid
From: Sahih Muslim. Chapter 1, Faith (Kitab Al Iman)
Narrated/Authority of Usama bin Zaid
that the
Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) sent us in a
raiding party. We raided Huraqat of Juhaina in the morning. I
caught hold of a man and he said: There is no god but Allah, I
attacked him with a spear. It once occurred to me and I talked
about it to the Apostle (may peace be upon him). The Messenger
of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: Did he profess" There
is no god but Allah," and even then you killed him? I said:
Messenger of Allah, he made a profession of it out of the fear
of the weapon. He (the Holy Prophet) observed: Did you tear
his heart in order to find out whether it had professed or
not? And he went on repeating it to me till I wished I had
embraced Islam that day. Sa'd said: By Allah, I would never
kill any Muslim so long as a person with a heavy belly, i. e.,
Usama, would not kill. Upon this a person remarked: Did Allah
not say this: And fight them until there is no more mischief
and religion is wholly for Allah? Sa'd said: We fought so that
there should be no mischief, but you and your companions wish
to fight so that there should be mischief.

From: Sahih Muslim. Chapter 1, Faith (Kitab Al Iman)
Narrated/Authority of Anas bin Malik
From: Sahih Muslim. Chapter 1, Faith (Kitab Al Iman)
Narrated/Authority of Anas bin Malik
that the
Prophet of Allah (may peace and blessings be upon him)
addressed Mu'adh b. Jabal as he was riding behind him to which
he replied: At thy beck and call, and at thy pleasure,
Messenger of Allah. He again called out: Mu'adh, to which he
(again) replied: At thy beck and call, and at thy pleasure. He
(the Holy Prophet) addressed him (again): Mu'adh, to which he
replied: At thy beck and call, and at thy pleasure, Messenger
of Allah. Upon this he (the Holy Prophet) observed: If anyone
testifies (sincerely from his heart) that there is no god but
Allah, and that Muhammad is His bondsman and His messenger,
Allah immuned him from Hell. He (Mu'adh) said: Messenger of
Allah, should I not then inform people of it, so that they may
be of good cheer? He replied: Then they would trust in it
alone. Mu'adh told about it at the time of his death, to avoid
sinning.

From: Sahih Bukhari. Chapter 12, Characteristics of Prayer
Narrated/Authority of Ibn Abbas
From: Sahih Bukhari. Chapter 12, Characteristics of Prayer
Narrated/Authority of Ibn Abbas
One night I slept at the house of my aunt Maimuna and the Prophet slept (too). He got up (for prayer) in the last hours of the night and performed a light ablution from a hanging leather skin. ('Amr, the sub-narrator described that the ablution was very light). Then he stood up for prayer and I got up too and performed the ablution in the same way and joined him on his left side. He pulled me to the right and prayed as much as Allah will. Then he lay down and slept and I heard his breath sounds till the Mu'adh-dhin came to him to inform him about the (Fajr) prayer. He left with him for the prayer and prayed without repeating the ablution. (Sufyan the subnarrator said: We said to 'Amr, "Some people say, 'The eyes of the Prophet sleep but his heart never sleeps.' " 'Amr said, "'Ubai bin 'Umar said, 'The dreams of the Prophets are Divine Inspirations. Then he recited, '(O my son), I have seen in dream that I was slaughtering you (offering you in sacrifice).") Narrated/Authority of Said bin Abu Said Al-Maqburi
From: Sahih Bukhari. Chapter 29, Penalty of Hunting while on Pilgrimage
Narrated/Authority of Said bin Abu Said Al-Maqburi
Abu Shuraih, Al-Adawi said that he had said to Amr bin Said when he was sending the troops to Makkah (to fight 'Abdullah bin Az-Zubair), "O Chief! Allow me to tell you what Allah's Apostle said on the day following the Conquest of Mecca. My ears heard that and my heart understood it thoroughly and I saw with my own eyes the Prophet when he, after Glorifying and Praising Allah, started saying, 'Allah, not the people, made Makkah a sanctuary, so anybody who has belief in Allah and the Last Day should neither shed blood in it, nor should he cut down its trees. If anybody tells (argues) that fighting in it is permissible on the basis that Allah's Apostle did fight in Makkah, say to him, 'Allah allowed His Apostle and did not allow you.' "Allah allowed me only for a few hours on that day (of the conquest) and today its sanctity is valid as it was before. So, those who are present should inform those who are absent (concerning this fact." Abu Shuraih was asked, "What did Amr reply?" He said, (Amr said) 'O Abu Shuraih! I know better than you in this respect Makkah does not give protection to a sinner, a murderer or a thief."

From: Sunan Abu Dawood. Chapter 1, Purification (Kitab Al-Taharah)
Narrated/Authority of Um Salama
From: Sunan Abu Dawood. Chapter 1, Purification (Kitab Al-Taharah)
Narrated/Authority of Um Salama
Bakkar ibn Yahya said that his grandmother narrated to him: I entered upon Umm Salamah. A woman from the Quraysh asked her about praying with the clothes which a woman wore while she menstruated.
Umm Salamah said: We would menstruate in the lifetime of the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him). Then each one of us refrained (from prayer) during menstrual period. When she was purified, she would look at the clothe in which she menstruated. If it were smeared with blood, we would wash it and pray with it; if there were nothing in it, we would leave it and that would not prevent us from praying with it (the same clothe).
As regards the woman who had plaited hair - sometimes each of us had plaited hair - when she washed, she would not undo the hair. She would instead pour three handfuls of water upon her head. When she felt moisture in the roots of her hair, she would rub them. Then she would pour water upon her whole body.

Narrated/Authority of Abu Huraira
Allah's Apostle entered the mosque and a person followed him. The man prayed and went to the Prophet and greeted him. The Prophet returned the greeting and said to him, "Go back and pray, for you have not prayed." The man went back prayed in the same way as before, returned and greeted the Prophet who said, "Go back and pray, for you have not prayed." This happened thrice. The man said, "By Him Who sent you with the Truth, I cannot offer the prayer in a better way than this. Please, teach me how to pray." The Prophet said, "When you stand for Prayer say Takbir and then recite from the Holy Qur'an (of what you know by heart) and then bow till you feel at ease. Then raise your head and stand up straight, then prostrate till you feel at ease during your prostration, then sit with calmness till you feel at ease (do not hurry) and do the same in all your prayers.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Said ibn Abi Said al-Maqburi from Abu Salama ibn Abd ar-Rahman ibn Awf that he asked A'isha, the wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, what the prayer of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was like during Ramadan. She said, "The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, did not go above eleven rakas in Ramadan or at any other time. He prayed four - do not ask me about their beauty or length. Then he prayed another four - do not ask me about their beauty and length. Then he prayed three."
A'isha continued, "I said, 'Messenger of Allah, are you sleeping before you do the witr?' He said, A'isha, my eyes sleep but my heart does not sleep.' "
