"When Walid bin Uqbah was brought to Uthman, they had testified against him. He said to Ali: 'You are close to your uncle's son, so carry out the legal punishment on him.' So Ali whipped him. He said: 'The Messenger of Allah (saw) gave forty lashes, and Abu Bakr gave forty lashes, and Umar gave eighty, and all are Sunnah.'" Sahih
