He prayed Subh when the dawn appeared, and he prayed Zuhr when the sun had (passed its zenith), and he prayed Asr when he saw that the shadow of a thing was equal to its height, then he prayed Maghrib when the sun had set and it is permissible for the fasting person to eat. Then he prayed Isha when the twilight had disappeared. Then he came to him the following day and prayed Subh when it had got a little lighter, then he prayed Zuhr when the shadow of a thing was equal to its height, then he prayed Asr when the shadow of a thing was equal to twice its height, then he prayed Maghrib at the same time as before, then he prayed Isha when a short period of the night had passed. From: Sunan at-Tirmidhi (Jami-al-Tirmidhi). Chapter 2, Salah (Prayers)
Narrated/Authority of Ibn Abbas
that the Prophet (SAW) said, "Jibril led me in Salah twice near Bayt Allah. The first time, we offered the Salah of Zuhr when the shadow was like the thong of a shoe. Then, we offered Asr when the shadow of everything was equal to it, and maghrib after sunset when the fasting man takes iftar (breaks his fast), and Isha when the twilight disappeared, and fajr when one who fasts is forbidden food and drink. The second time, we offerred Zuhr when the shadow of everything was like it in length at the time of Asr on the previous day. Then we offered the Asr when the shadow of everything was twice as long. We prayed Maghrib at the same time as the previous day; we prayed Isha when one-third of the night was over and Fajr when the earth was well-lit. Then Jibril turned to me and said; "O Muhammad! This was the time observed by Prophets before you, and the time (of five Salah) is between these two times." [Ahmed 3081, Abu Dawud 393]

Narrated/Authority of Talha bin Ubaidullah
that a person with dishevelled hair, one of the people of Najd, came to the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him). We heard the humming of his voice but could not fully discern what he had been saying, till he came nigh to the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him). It was then (disclosed to us) that he was asking questions pertaining to Islam. The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: Five prayers during the day and the night. (Upon this he said: Am I obliged to say any other (prayer) besides these? He (the Holy Prophet, ) said: No, but whatever you observe voluntarily, out of your own free will, and the fasts of Ramadan. The inquirer said: Am I obliged to do anything else besides this? He (the Holy Prophet) said: No, but whatever you do out of your own free will. And the Messenger of Allah told him about the Zakat (poor-rate). The inquirer said: Am I obliged to pay anything else besides this? He (the Holy Prophet) said: No, but whatever you pay voluntarily out of your own free will. The man turned back and was saying: I would neither make any addition to this, nor will decrease anything out of it. The Prophet remarked: He is successful, if he is true to what he affirms.

Narrated/Authority of Hudhaifah bin Yaman
that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said: that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said:"Islam will wear out as embroidery on a garment wears out, until no one will know what fasting, prayer, (pilgrimage) rites and charity are. The Book of Allah will be taken away at night, and not one Verse of it will be left on earth. And there will be some people left, old men and old women, who will say: "We saw our fathers saying these words: 'La ilaha illallah' so we say them too." Silah said to him: "What good will (saying): La ilaha illallah do them, when they do not know what fasting, prayer, (pilgrimage) rites and charity are?" Hudhaifah turned away from his. He repeated his question three times, and Hudhaifah turned away from him each time. Then he turned to him on the third time and said: "O Silah! It will save them from Hell," three times.

From: Sunan Ibn Majah. Chapter 7, The Chapters of Establishing the Prayer and the Sunnah Regarding Them
Narrated/Authority of Sharik bin Abdullah bin Abu Namir
that he heard Anas bin Malik say: "While we were sitting in the mosque, a man entered riding a camel; he made it kneel in the mosque, then he hobbled it and said to them: 'Which of you is Muhammad?' The Messenger of Allah (saw) was reclining among them, so they said: 'This fair- skinned man who is reclining.' The man said to him: 'O son of Abdul- Muttalib!' The Prophet (saw) said: 'I am listening to you.' The man said: O Muhammad! I am asking you and will be stern in asking, so do not bear any ill-feelings towards me.' He said: 'Ask whatever you think.' The man said: 'I adjure you by your Lord and the Lord of those who came before you, has Allah sent you to all of mankind?' The Messenger of Allah (saw) said: 'By Allah, yes.; He said: 'I adjure you by Allah, has Allah commanded you to pray the five prayers each day and night?' The Messenger of Allah (saw) said: 'By Allah, yes.' He said: 'I adjure you by Allah, has Allah commanded you to fast this month of each year?' The Messenger of Allah (saw) said: 'By Allah, yes.' He said: 'I adjure you by Allah, has Allah commanded you to take this charity from our rich and distribute it among our poor?' The Messenger of Allah (saw) said: 'By Allah, yes.' The man said: 'I believe in what you have brought, and I am the envoy of my people who are behind me. I am Dimam bin Tha'labah, the brother of Banu Sad bin Bakr.'"

From: Imam Malik's Muwatta. Chapter 9, Shortening the Prayer
Narrated/Authority of Talha bin Ubaidullah
Yahya related to me from Malik from his paternal uncle Abu Suhayl ibn Malik that his father heard Talha ibn Ubaydullah say, "Once one of the people of Najd came to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. He had dishevelled hair and although his voice could be heard we could not make out what he was saying until he drew nearer and then we found he was asking about Islam. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to him, 'There are five prayers during the day and the night.' He said, 'Do I have to do anything else besides that?' The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, added, 'And fasting the month of Ramadan.' He said, 'Is there anything else I have to do?' He said, 'No, except what you do of your own accord.' The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, mentioned zakat. The man said, 'Is there anything else that I have to do?' He said, 'No, except what you do of your own accord.' He continued, "The man went away saying, 'By Allah, I won't do any more than this, nor will I do any less.' The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'That man will be successful, if he is telling the truth.'

From: Sahih Bukhari. Chapter 50, Witnesses
Narrated/Authority of Talha bin Ubaidullah
A man came to Allah's Apostle (SAW) asking him about Islam, Allah's Apostle (SAW) said, "You have to offer five compulsory prayers in a day and a night (24 hours)." The man asked, "Is there any more compulsory prayers for me?" Allah's Apostle (SAW) said, "No, unless you like to offer Nawafil (i.e. optional prayers)." Allah's Apostle (SAW) then added, "You have to observe saum (fasts) during the month of Ramadan." The man said, "Am I to fast any other days?' Allah's Apostle (SAW) said, "No, unless you wish to observe the optional fast voluntarily." Then Allah's Apostle (SAW) told him about the compulsory Zakat. The man asked, "Do I have to give anything besides?" Allah's Apostle (SAW) said, "No, unless you wish to give in charity voluntarily." So, the man departed saying, "By Allah I will neither do more nor less than that." Allah's Apostle (SAW) said, "If he has said the truth he will be successful."

From: Imam Malik's Muwatta. Chapter 2, Purity
Narrated/Authority of
Yahya related to me from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa from his father from Humran, the mawla of Uthman ibn Affan, that Uthman ibn Affan was once sitting on the Maqaid (the benches surrounding the Madina Mosque, or else a stone near Uthman ibn Affan's house where he sat to discuss with people), when the muadhdhin came and told him that it was time for the asr prayer. He called for water and did wudu. Then he said, "By Allah, I shall tell you something which I would not tell you if it were not in the Book of Allah. I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say, 'If a man does wudu, and makes sure he does it correctly, and then does the prayer, he will be forgiven everything that he does between then and the time when he prays the next prayer.' " Yahya said that Malik said, "I believe he meant this ayat - 'Establish prayer at the two ends of the day and in some watches of the night. Good actions take away wrong actions. That is a reminder for those who remember.' " (Sura 11 ayat 114).

Hadith No: 228
From: Imam Malik's Muwatta. Chapter 20, Hajj
Narrated/Authority of
Yahya related to me from Malik that Yahya ibn Said heard Ata ibn Abi Rabah mentioning that the camel-herders were allowed to throw the stones at night, and saying that this was in the early period (of Islam). Malik said, "The explanation of the hadith where the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, allowed the camel-herders to delay the stoning of the jamras is, in our view, and Allah knows best, that they threw stones on the day of sacrifice, and then threw again two days later, which was the first possible day for leaving, and this throwing was for the day which had passed. They then threw again for the day itself, because it is only possible for someone to make up for something which is obligatory for him, and when something obligatory passes someone by (without him doing it) he must necessarily make it up afterwards (and not beforehand). So (in the case of the camel-herders), if it seemed appropriate for them to leave that day, they would have done all that they were supposed to do, and if they were to stay until the following day, they would throw stones with everybody else on the second and last day for leaving, and then leave."

From: Sunan Ibn Majah. Chapter 34, The Chapters on Medicine
Narrated/Authority of Aisha
"A Jew from among the Jews of Bani Zuraiq, whose name was Labid bin A'sam, cast a spell on the Prophet (saw), and the Prophet (saw) began to imagine that he had done something when he had not. One day, or one night, the Messenger of Allah (saw) supplicated, and then supplicated again. Then he said: 'O Aisha, do you know that Allah has instructed me concerning the matter I asked Him about? Two men came to me, and one of them sat at my head and the other at my feet. The one at my head said to the one at my feet, or the one at my feet said to the one at my head "what is ailing this man ?" He said: "He has been affected by a spell." He said: "Who cast the spell on him?" He said: "Labid bin A'sam." He said: "With what?" He said: "With a comb and the hairs stuck to it, and the spathe of a male date palm." He said: "Where is that?" He said: "In the well of Dhu Arwan." She said: "So the Prophet (saw) went to it, with a group of his Companions, then he came and said: 'By Allah. O Aisha. It was as if its water was infused with henna and its date palms were like the heads of devils.'" She said: "I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, why don't you burn them?' He said: 'As for me, Allah has healed me, and I do not like to let evil spread among the people.' Then he issued orders that the well be filled up with earth."
