Allah's Apostle said: islam is based on (the following) five (principles): 1. To testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and Muhammad is Allah's Apostle. 2. To offer the (compulsory congregational) prayers dutifully and perfectly. 3. To pay Zakat (i.e. obligatory charity) . 4. To perform Hajj. (i.e. Pilgrimage to Mecca) 5. To observe fast during the month of Ramadan.

A man whose face was covered with an iron mask (i.e. clad in armour) came to the Prophet (SAW) and said, "O Allah's Apostle (SAW)! Shall I fight or embrace islam first? "The Prophet (SAW) said, "Embrace islam first and then fight." So he embraced islam, and was martyred. Allah's Apostle (SAW) said, A Little work, but a great reward." [He did very little (after embracing islam), but he will be rewarded in abundance]."

Allah's Apostle said, "Every child is born with a true faith of islam (i.e. to worship none but Allah Alone) but his parents convert him to Judaism, Christianity or Magainism, as an animal delivers a perfect baby animal. Do you find it mutilated?" Then Abu Huraira recited the holy verses: "The pure Allah's islamic nature (true faith of islam) (i.e. worshipping none but Allah) with which He has created human beings. No change let there be in the religion of Allah (i.e. joining none in worship with Allah). That is the straight religion (islam) but most of men know, not." (30.30)

A young Jewish boy used to serve the Prophet and he became sick. So the Prophet went to visit him. He sat near his head and asked him to embrace islam. The boy looked at his father, who was sitting there; the latter told him to obey Abu-l-Qasim and the boy embraced islam. The Prophet came out saying: "Praises be to Allah Who saved the boy from the Hell-fire."

A bedouin came to the Prophet and gave a pledge of allegiance for embracing islam. The next day he came with fever and said (to the Prophet ), "Please cancel my pledge (of embracing islam and of emigrating to Medina)." The Prophet refused (that request) three times and said, "Medina is like a furnace, it expels out the impurities (bad persons) and selects the good ones and makes them perfect."

My father told me that Hakim bin Hizam manumitted one-hundred slaves in the pre-lslamic period of ignorance and slaughtered one hundred camels (and distributed them in charity). When he embraced islam he again slaughtered one hundred camels and manumitted one hundred slaves. Hakim said, "I asked Allah's Apostle (SAW), 'O Allah's Apostle (SAW)! What do you think about some good deeds I used to practice in the pre-lslamic period of ignorance regarding them as deeds of righteousness?' Allah's Apostle (SAW) said, "You have embraced islam along with all those good deeds you did."
